Introduction

My name is Nathaniel Norman. I am 23 years old. I have lives here in Albuquerque my entire life, and have been studying Exercise Science for the past year and a half at UNM. Previously, I've worked as a Maintenance Technician for Dions, as well as studied Welding at CNM.

Some of my favorite things I've learned over this semester:

  • Nervous system electrophysiology
  • Freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke in swimming
  • Bone physiology

My writing process has generally been the same for a long time. I've historically not had difficulty sitting down and writing for long periods of time. Usually, I'll ponder the prompt for a while, until I come up with a subject that I think I can flesh out enough to meet the requirements of the prompt. From there, I'll come up with a general idea of what I want to write and sit down and write it. Given the requirements of this class, I can usually write most of my paper in 1 or 2 sessions. From there, I'll leave it for a while, come back, and finalize.

Overall, I would say my writing skills havent changed much over the course of this class. I do have a lot of experience writing, and prior to this class I believe I was already quite a strong writer. Probably the biggest takeaway from this class for me would be the research paper, as my field is very research heavy. It is beneficial because I need to be able to clearly represent research findings, and convince an audience that they are meaningful and representative.

Peer review and revision of projects is another thing that was an improvement for me in this class. I think having another person review your writing is especially important, because they will look at it differently and unbiased. I think when I write I have had a tendency to think that the audience already knows exactly what I'm talking about, and my writing ends up being confusing. I think having another person, who knows nothing about what I'm writing, review, is especially helpful. I also like to look at other's writing and see how what they're doing can possibly benefit my writing.

Overall, ENGL 1120 has been beneficial to me in strengthening my own writing. While I have been historically a strong writer, lessons in reviewing my own work have been beneficial, and will continue to be as there is lots of writing down the path for me.
